ABOUT
Today’s world has added a great deal of complexity to the traditional challenges of parenting.
First, there is the foundation of teaching important values and responsibilities that will help your child in the future. You want your child to learn to cope flexibly with stress, to grow academically, and to become socially adept.
However, parents and children today have new challenges - rapidly changing environments, technology, social media, widely variable educational settings, and fierce academic competition - the goal is still the same: for children to learn to engage with the world, and for them to grow into independent and responsible young adults.
There is no shortage of advice, that’s for sure. Parenting books, news items and talk shows, and the sea of information to be found on the Internet provide the answer to anything that can be put into a search engine. There have been valuable new programs developed in the last several years, but there is also much to be said about the traditions passed down and time tested by earlier generations. The challenge in a ‘help-rich’ environment is in making sense of it all. Too many choices can lead to feeling overwhelmed and stuck.
What I offer in therapy is to be your guide. In working with your child or teen, or cooperatively with you as a parent, we can tailor a suit from all of the available cloth of advice to find what best fits your specific child. Even great advice is useless to you if it does not match up with the pragmatic day-to-day needs of your child and family. Also, there is a dynamic nature to helping children, and it helps to have someone experienced in seeing things shift and adapting to that wisely and promptly. I create a personalized approach guided by research backed methods and years of psychological training and practice, which I combine with the insights and experience that your family brings to therapy.
About Dr. Davis
I am licensed psychologist with a Doctoral Degree in Clinical Psychology from Spalding University in Louisville, Kentucky. I also hold undergraduate degrees from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Psychology and International Studies.
As part of my graduate education, I worked in community mental health settings, as a school counselor, and with the parents of special needs foster children. Previously, I taught students with learning differences at Guildford Day School (now Noble Academy) in Greensboro, and I have provided tutoring and academic mentoring to students with issues that impact learning. I worked in a group private practice in Raleigh and Cary for several years before opening my own practice. In my clinical work, I provide therapeutic services to children, adolescents, young adults, parents/caregivers, and families.
I treat a broad range of concerns, including but not limited to: behavior and attention disorders, anxiety (e.g., generalized anxiety, school anxiety/refusal, obsessive-compulsive disorder), depression, parenting difficulties, and other family-related problems. In addition, I have experience working with children with learning differences, social skills deficits and children on the autism spectrum (sometimes referred to as Asperger’s disorder).
